Najib: Government to hasten effort to make changes to pro-women legislation

KUALA LUMPUR: Pro-women legislation is to be given due attention and there will not be a repeat of waiting at least seven years for a Bill to be passed, as what happened with the Domestic Violence Act.

“I guarantee you, for something good, it will not take seven years,” Datuk Seri Najib Razak said at the National Council of Women's Organisations (NCWO) golden jubilee celebrations here yesterday.

The Prime Minister assured that the Government would hasten effort to make changes to legislation, regulations, practices and thinking that obstructed the progress of women.

Najib, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister, invited NCWO to come up with a working paper on advancing the cause of women.

NCWO president Tan Sri Prof Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin said the council would send an updated version of a working paper to Najib as soon as possible.

She stressed the need for changes for women to be made speedily.

NCWO had handed over a memorandum of the draft law on domestic violence in 1987 but it was only passed by Parliament in 1994 and implemented in 1996, she noted.

Dr Sharifah said laws, policies, structures and administrative processes needed to be reviewed and changed so that women would no longer face discrimination.

BATU CAVES: When contractor C.R. Pusparajan fell into bad times over 15 years ago, he prayed to Lord Murugan for help.

When his fortunes turned around, a thankful Pusparajan made a promise he would carry the kavadi during Thaipusam.

“I used to have bad luck. I was unemployed, but I prayed, and give thanks to Lord Murugan, I am a towkay (business owner) now,” Pusparajan, 30, said.

He added that Lord Murugan had also turned him from a bad person into a good person, and he would continue to carry the kavadi as long as he could.

This is the 18th year that the contractor has carried the kavadi at the Batu Caves temple.

Thaipusam: Blessed ritual to fulfil vows

What is the significance of Thaipusam? This and other questions tweeted by readers over the last couple of days are answered by MIC secretary-general Datuk S. Murugesan (pic), who is well-versed in Hinduism as well as its customs and rituals.

WHY is Batu Caves such an important gathering point?
Thaipusam is the religious festival for Lord Muruga and Batu Caves is the biggest Murugan Temple in Malaysia. It is also close to Kuala Lumpur.

> What's the significance of Batu Caves and how did that come about?
Batu Caves was promoted as a place of worship by K. Thamboosamy Pillai (a prominent leader of the Tamil community during the pre-independence days). He was inspired by the vel-shaped entrance of the main cave and dedicated a temple to Lord Murugan within the caves.

> Why would people want to hurt themselves by piercing? Is it a must?
Hurt or pain is not a must. However, devotees might have taken a vow that they will perform such and such a deed if their prayers are answered. They might incorporate an element of pain in the act of fulfilment.

> I thought Thaipusam was only a few weeks ago. How are these dates set annually?
That was not Thaipusam, it was the beginning of the Tamil month of Thai which fell on Jan 14 this year. Thaipusam is celebrated annually on the full moon in the month of Thai, which falls around the end of January or early February. All these dates are set out in the Hindu calendar, which varies from the English calendar. Thaipusam got its name as it falls on Pusam natchatiram (Hindu astrological star) in the month of Thai.

PUTRAJAYA: Top investors from around the world view Malaysia as a “bright spot” amidst global financial uncertainty, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said the country attracted overwhelming support at the recently concluded World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

“The Malaysia Night we hosted there was met with an extraordinary reception.

“We had expected only 400 to attend, instead 1,000 influential people turned up.

“In a global climate of uncertainty, they said Malaysia is one of few countries that they consider to be a bright spot,” he said when addressing thousands of people who had turned up at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to welcome him home yesterday.

The crowd had gathered at the Bunga Raya Complex as early as 9am to welcome Najib, his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and the Malaysian delegation back from their tour of Gaza and the WEF.

Najib: Social media a double-edged sword

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has singled out social media as a double-edged sword for Barisan Nasional as the coalition prepares for the general election.

The Prime Minister and Barisan chairman said that with the advent of ICT, social media had turned into something that was “good” as well as a “bane”.

“(It) could be our Achilles heel as well,” he told anchor Fareed Zakaria in a CNN televised session at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

He acknowledged that voters nowadays had a higher level of expectations, were more educated and critical, and as such, the Government needed to do things differently.

“We need to realise people are not going to give their votes to you based on how much you have done in the past.

“No one can deny the fact that Umno and Barisan are the ones who fought for independence and developed the country but today people are saying that was in the past, we want to know what you can do for us in the future,” he said.

If he was re-elected as Prime Minister, Najib pledged that he would do “everything and anything possible” to make Malaysia a fully developed nation by 2020.

Najib: Malaysians' expectations, demand have increased

KUALA LUMPUR: People's expectations and demand of the government have increased, and this should be well understood to ensure Barisan Nasional's victory in the next general election, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

Najib, who is Barisan chairman, said having realised this, the government was determined to do things differently and work as hard as possible.

"We need to realise that people are not going to give their votes to you based on how much you've done in the past.
"But people would say, 'what can you do right now and for the future'," he told a CNN televised session entitled 'An Insight, An Idea with Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak' at the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

Najib noted that nobody could deny the fact that Umno and BN had pursued an agenda for development after fighting for the country's independence.

On Barisan's failure to win a two-thirds majority in the 2008 general election, Najib explained one of the factors was that people had become more critical in tandem with advances in technology and communication, as well as the use of social media.

At the end of the interview, the prime minister was queried about his plans if given the mandate to rule by voters in the country's 13th general election.

He responded by saying that the government had stated publicly that it wanted to see Malaysia become a fully developed nation by 2020.

"And I'm committed to do everything and anything possible to make it happen and if I get my second term, that's exactly what I'll do."

KUALA LUMPUR: The threat of Islamic militants in Southeast Asia has receded quite substantially due the efforts from other nations in the region, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

He said the cooperation between Malaysia and the other countries, including Indonesia and the Philippines, had helped to tackle Al-Qaeda-linked groups.

"I think most of them (the countries) are behind us. I think we've dealt with radical Islam," he told a CNN televised session entitled 'An Insight, An Idea with Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak' at the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

In the 30-minute interview which was anchored by Fareed Zakaria, the Prime Minister also pointed out Malaysia's involvement in hosting peace talks between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and its deployment of troops to head an international truce-monitoring force in the region.

Pro-growth policies, incentives boosted Malaysia’s recovery, Najib tells forum

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has emphasised that pro-growth policies coupled with incentives to push private sector are crucial ingredients that Malaysia successfully employed to help the nation recover from the regional and global economic downturn.

And over the past few years with the global economy in turmoil from the subprime credit and Eurozone debt crisis, Najib said that it was the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) that led to a remarkable jump in private investments and that was really the engine of growth,” Najib told a Al-Jazeera televised session entitled “The Economic Malaise and its Perils” at the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

“Things are looking up in Malaysia as the country has chalked up slow growth similar to other East Asian and Asian economies despite the global economic crisis and unlike Europe which has experienced decelerating growth,” he said as a panelist at the forum hosted by Al-Jazeera anchored by Kamahl Santamaria Friday.

Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said revitalising the private sector through the ETP unveiled in 2010 had created over 300,000 jobs and had brought down unemployment to 3.1 per cent which is regarded as full employment.

Najib shares economic success tips

DAVOS: MALAYSIA outlined its primary policy of managing growth while transforming its economy as an important step that has kept unemployment at a low three per cent, a level technically recognised as full employment.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who sat in a panel discussion on "Economic Malaise and its Perils" hosted by Al Jazeera's English network here yesterday, said the key to Malaysia's economic transformation was to get out of the middle-income trap.

He said coming out of the crippling 1997 Asian meltdown, Malaysia realised that while its economy was growing, it was growing slowly.

"We decided to put the private sector in the forefront of economic development and saw a sharp increase in private investment and in the process created more than 300,000 new jobs in a short space of three years."

The discussion started by examining problems faced by Europe and also the managed slowdown in China, and how these developments were affecting the job market.

The panellists agreed that creating big companies alone were not enough. The challenge, they said, was creating a society that is ready to meet every need that came with development.

With the tagline “Endless Possibilities”, the advertisements together with an advertorial in the Economist highlights the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and the Government Transforma-tion Programme (GTP).

Malaysia to see RM5.5bil worth of investments

DAVOS: Several multinational companies have agreed in principle to invest a total of RM5.5bil over several years, mostly up and down the value chain of Malaysia's resurgent oil and gas (O&G) industry.

While the investment figure was just a ballpark figure, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said during meetings held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, which began here Thursday, heads and senior management of these multinational companies expressed interest in investing in the country.

"I met with Itochu Corp, which has expressed an interest in partnering Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) to further develop the petrochemical industry in the Refinery & Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) project in Pengerang," he said.

Najib said the talks were coming to fruition and this would positively impact the development of the RM60bil Rapid project.

He said besides this project, Itochu has also expressed an interest in setting up an integrated seamless pipe factory for the O&G industry.

Meanwhile, Najib said the Hanwha Group, a South Korean industrial group, has expressed interest in several investments, including taking over Thalheim, Germany-based Q-Cells SE's Malaysian operations.

Najib's second day at WEF starts with televised session with Al-Jazeera

DAVOS, Switzerland: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will begin his second day working visit to the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2013 with a televised session from Al-Jazeera.

Najib strengthens ties with Egypt and Palestinians

CAIRO: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's three-day working visit to Egypt, including a one-day humanitarian visit to Gaza, beginning last Monday is like killing two birds with a stone, strengthening ties with Egypt as well as the Palestinians.

Firstly, through this visit he had established a foundation or a framework with Egpyt, led by President Mohamed Morsi, the first president to be elected through the democratic process after the Arab Spring, sparked by prolonged protests by Egyptians at the Tahrir Square, last year.

Through this visit, Najib also managed to explore potential investment and business opportunities for Malaysian companies to participate in Egypt's post Arab-Spring economic development.

His Egyptian counterpart, Prime Minister Dr Hesham Mohamed Qandil has expressed his country's interest to colloborate with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) through Egypt Petroleum Company to bid for petroleum exploration projects in the African continent.

Egypt would also like to have a joint venture through one of its government-linked companies (GLCs) with Proton to assemble cars in the Land of the Pharaohs.

Najib told Malaysian newsmen at his press conference here, before departing to Davos, Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum, that this was the opportune time for Malaysian companies to penetrate the Egyptian market because the country was in the process of restructuring its economic development.

Najib: Moderation must prevail to build progressive nation

KUALA LUMPUR: The concept of "wasatiyyah" or moderation as taught by Prophet Muhammad should prevail to ensure that the mission of building a progressive and competitive nation is achieved, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

In his message in conjunction with Prophet Muhammad's birthday celebration Thursday, Najib said the Prophet was a role model who practised moderation in his life and the concept had brought about unity and solidarity of Muslims throughout the world.

"Moderation as practised by the Prophet has resulted in creating the momentum to drive the development of each race and country in the world.

"Therefore, this momentum needs to continue to ensure our mission to build a progressive and competitive country is achieved," he said in his personal blog Wednesday.

Najib said Malaysia's ability to strengthen relations between the West and Islamic world was highlighted by former Asean secretary-general Dr Surin Pitsuwan as a successful model of the moderate approach, as practised by the Malaysian government in handling various issues and conflicts in the region.

He said the practice of moderation in Malaysia had become the best example to Islamic countries in resolving regional issues, including Malaysia's success as mediator in the southern Philippine conflict, which proved that it was not only respected among Islamic countries but also among western countries.

Perutusan YAB Perdana Menteri Sempena Sambutan Maulidur Rasul 1434H

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim,
Assalamu ‘alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

PETALING JAYA: Several non-governmental organisations involved in the Palestinian cause praised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on his efforts to help mend ties between the Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah.

Sekretariat Dana Hospital 4 Gaza's chief operating officer Mohd Nazri Sahat said it was a historic moment, not only for the country, but also for local NGOs that had been helping the Palestinians over the years.

“We definitely support the Prime Minister in getting Malaysia to play a role in the reconciliation talks between Hamas and Fatah,” he said here yesterday.

He said Najib's historic visit to Gaza also bore special significance for the secretariat, which comes under the Islamic Associations Consultative Council (Mapim).

Najib feels for people of Palestine in more ways than one

CAIRO: The Palestinian cause is close to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s heart through a personal connection – two foster children.

The Prime Minister had adopted the two Palestinian children by way of sponsorship via a Malaysian charity organisation when he was the Education Minister, and later Defence Minister.

“It is one of the reasons why the issue is close to my heart and why visiting Palestine has been something I have always wanted to do,” he said, adding that the children were from the West Bank.

“I used to send money to them every month.”

Najib said he sponsored the children through the Malaysian Social Research Insitute (MSRI), founded by the late Dr Elijah Gordon – a renowned activist for the Palestinian cause.

Asked whether he still kept in touch with the two children, Najib said he had lost touch with them after Gordon’s death.

He suggested that such adoption programmes be revived so that others could also foster Palestinian children.

PM IN GAZA: Najib's groundbreaking visit

CAIRO: PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said his ground-breaking visit to Gaza on Tuesday was humanitarian in nature and should not be misconstrued as an interference into the domestic affairs of Palestine.

Najib said he would have visited the Fatah-ruled West Bank if not for the constraints placed by Israel's air control over the Palestinian Territories.

"It was my every intention to also visit Ramallah (de facto capital of the Palestinian Authority) but since I have to fly to get there and the sky is controlled by Israel, I could not make the trip," he said at the end of his three-day visit to Gaza and Egypt.

For Israel to give permission to fly into Ramallah would have meant that Malaysia would have to recognise Tel Aviv.

Najib was asked to comment on reports that his visit to the Hamas-controlled Gaza on Tuesday -- the first by a Malaysian prime minister -- had drawn reactions from the office of Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

Kelantan flood victims appreciate assistance

Kota Baharu: “My family and I are thankful to be able to move out in time to this flood relief centre,” said Shamsiah Saufi, 41, a resident of Kampung Tasik, here, whose home was submerged by the floods last month.

Shamsiah, her husband and 10 children were relocated to the Sekolah Kebangsaan Banggu flood relief centre here, together with other residents in the village when the flood water rose to waist level, the worst ever flood to hit the village.

“It humbles me to receive this assistance as everything is provided to meet our needs,” she added.

DAVOS, Jan 23 — Despite freezing temperatures, Datuk Seri Najib Razak will be kept warm at the ski resort here given the tight schedule throughout his participation at this year’s prestigious World Economic Forum (WEF) beginning Wednesday.

Najib, who will be attending the four-day WEF as prime minister for the first time, has more than 10 courtesy calls on foreign leaders, one-on-one meetings with business chieftains, as well as bilateral meetings lined up.

Malaysian Ambassador to Switzerland Datuk Ho May Yong, said the prime minister was invited by WEF executive chairman Prof Klaus Schwab to attend the forum to share Malaysia’s transformation progress.

“The prime minister decided to accept the invitation,” she told Malaysian journalists covering the event late yesterday at the resort in below freezing temperatures, cold winds and foggy conditions.

The WEF annual meeting is a much-anticipated forum that brings together influential leaders from the realm of politics, business and civil society to discuss a wide range of global issues.

Visit hailed as a testimony of commitment to Palestine

PETALING JAYA: Both politicians and non-governmental organisations have described Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s historical visit to Gaza as a testimony of Malay- sia’s commitment to the Palestinian cause.

In congratulating the Prime Minister for being the country’s first head of government to make such a trip, they said Najib’s visit proved that Malaysia and its people were sincere in extending a helping hand to Palestine.

Perdana Global Peace Organisation adviser Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said Najib’s visit provided a huge morale boost for Palestinians trying to get recognition from the international community.

“The visit shows that we (Malaysia) put our money where our mouth is and not just provide lip service. Here, we have a head of government visiting a place that was a target of severe bombardment until recently,” he said, likening this to the one made by his father, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad, to Sarajevo during the Bosnian war in the 1990s.

Kota Belud MP Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said Najib’s visit to Gaza renewed Malaysia’s unwavering commitment to Palestine and demonstrated that foreign relations were as important as domestic concerns.

“I join fellow Sabahans in expressing our support to the Prime Minister to play a bigger role in international peace process initiatives, such as Palestine-Israel and in the southern Thailand region,” he said.

Big support for a just cause

Malaysia strongly supports the Palestinian people's bid for freedom from Israeli occupation and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak took the opportunity to make a historic humanitarian working trip to the Gaza Strip.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak travelled by land from the El-Arish airport near the Egyptian border to Gaza City in Palestine in a historic humanitarian working visit there yesterday.

The land crossing allowed the Prime Minister to see for himself the effects of an Israeli attack on the city in November.

During his nearly two-hour car trip, Najib would have also gained a rare glimpse of the hardship that the 1.7 million residents of the Gaza Strip have had to endure in their struggle for liberation.

Just half the size of Perlis but with a population that is eight times larger, the 369 sq km Gaza Strip, along with the West Bank which borders Jordan, make up the Palestinian occupied territories whose cause Malaysia has long championed.

GAZA CITY: Malaysia has offered to help unite rival Palestinian groups Fatah and Hamas.

The first Malaysian Prime Minister to visit Palestine, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak expressed support for a reconciliation plan to end the division between the two Palestinian movements.

“A unity government is within reach,” the Prime Minister said after being conferred a honorary doctorate by the al-Aqsa University in East Jerusalem yesterday.

He said that peace and prosperity could only be achieved through unity, a belief strengthened by Malaysia's success in facilitating talks in the southern Philippine to end four decades of conflict that had killed over 120,000 people.

“Should it be needed, we stand ready to offer you the benefit of that experience. Malaysia, always a friend of the Palestine people, is willing to help facilitate the reconciliation plan in whichever way we can,” he said.

A split between the two groups in 2007 led to the West Bank being governed by Fatah and the Gaza Strip by Hamas. The two sides signed a reconciliation plan sponsored by Egypt in May last year.

Najib, who was in Gaza on a humanitarian visit, said his commitment to a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian issue was clear.

“We wish to see an independent, unified Palestine, enjoying the peace and security which all the world's peoples deserve.”

Gaza: Najib given red carpet welcome

From the moment Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak crossed the Rafah border into Gaza from Egypt, something in the weather foretold that it was going to be an extra special visit.

Najib was given a red carpet welcome, complete with a  military band playing the Malaysian and the Palestinian  anthems.

After inspecting the guard of honour, Najib accompanied  by Palestinian Prime Minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh addressed an open air packed press conference outside the  immigration building.

What came after the prelude was something unexpected.

The Hamas host took Najib and his delegation on a fast  tracked tour of destruction sites in Gaza.

A formula one driver would be proud as the convoy which  carried both prime ministers passed through narrow and  dusty lanes at breakneck speed.

Along the way, the programme book was thrown out of the  window.

Najib was taken .to several places that were not in the  original itinerary, mostly he saw first hand the destruction of  houses, a stadium and mosque.

The weather was getting warmer and the host was  adamant that the Malaysian leader and his delegation would  see for themselves the naked aggression that the Israeli  brought upon the hapless Palestinian people.

Najib is first Malaysian PM to visit Gaza

GAZA CITY, Palestine: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak became the first Malaysian Prime Minister to set foot on the Palestinian soil when he entered the Gaza Strip this morning to begin a one-day humanitarian visit.

He is also the only the second head of government or state to visit Gaza  since Hamas took control of the tiny enclave more than five years ago.

The Prime Minister who flew into Cairo yesterday, crossed the Gaza Strip from Egypt at the border crossing of Rafah.

Najib was accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom. He was welcomed by Hamas officials at the Gaza side of border crossing led by Palestine Prime Minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh.

The Prime Minister will be taken around the small Palestinian territory - half the size of Perlis but eight time its population - by Haniyeh. He will lay the foundation stone of the new Palestinian Prime Minister's office after the old one was destroyed in an Israeli bombing last November.

Najib will be meeting wth Haniyeh's cabinet member and members of Parliament.
