Najib to attend events in conjunction with Ponggal

KLANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will attend several functions in Selangor in conjunction with the Ponggal celebrations in the state.

Selangor Barisan Nasional coordinator Datuk Seri Mohd Zin said Najib, who is Barisan Nasional chairman, is expected to deliver an important speech to the Indian community during his visit.

He said Najib would attend a massive gathering organised by the IPF in Semenyih on Sunday and a meet-the-people session at Little India here.

“This will be his first official meeting as Prime Minister to the Barisan-friendly party,” he said in a press statement issued yesterday.

Mohd Zin said that about 10,000 IPF members were expected to attend the event, which he said would be a historical one after the death of party founder Tan Sri M. G. Pandithan in 2008.

“Current party leader Datuk M. Sambanthan has done a lot for Barisan, and he is expected to help Barisan reclaim states which are now ruled by Pakatan Rakyat,” he added.

Mohd Zin said Najib would inspect the preparations for the Ponggal festival at Little India and attend a Ponggal programme, organised by Barisan, in Padang Chetty at 9.30am on Sunday.

He added that MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel and several other leaders would also be present that day.

“The support by the Indian community in Selangor has gone up tremendously, and we are confident that Barisan can reclaim Selangor in the coming general election,” Mohd Zin said.
