In fact, he said it had proven the ability of all parties whether the authorities or organisers to heed the provisions and spirit of the Act.
"In short, what happened shows the reforms we undertook in this directionwere right.
"I thank the opposition although I did not agree with them (on the rally) for respecting the spirit of the Act," he said when opening the "Transformationof Security and Fundamental Rights Legislation, Rights and Responsibilities:Between Hope and Challenges" conference at a hotel here today.
Some 45,000 people from opposition parties and non-governmental organisations attended the rally that was held at Merdeka Stadium here.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said that there has never been and there can be no one-party system implemented in Malaysia.
He said this was because the people in this country held different views which was very healthy.
"History has shown that the practice of democracy in this country has neverbeen broken since the people voted for the first time as an independent nationin the year 1959, except for a period of less than two years when the countrywas put under Mageran (National Operations Council) in the wake of the May 13 tragedy in 1969.
"History also bears witness that there has never been a military coup in Malaysia because the principle of civilian supremacy is always understood and respected all parties," he said when opening the "Transformation of Security and Fundamental Rights Legislation, Rights and Responsibilities: Between Hope and Challenges" conference at a hotel here today.
Najib said Malaysia was one of the few contries in the world that had been able to build a strong nation despite having a multiracial society and without having to sacrifice the core principles of democracy. - Bernama
