Set aside differences, says Najib

KUALA LUMPUR: DATUK Seri Najib Razak has called on all Malaysians, regardless of race or ethnicity, to come together as one.

In his Wesak Day message, the prime minister said that his sole wish for Malaysia was for everyone to set aside their differences for the greater good.

"I wish for neighbours to treat one another with kindness, spouses with love and siblings with kindness. For children to be respectful and parents to be nurturing.

"And of course, for the people to prosper under this government, and for politicians to serve them to the best of their abilities," he wrote on his blog, www.1mal-aysia.com.my.

He said the country was growing steadily towards the pinnacle of its achievements, Vision 2020, which could only be achieved if the people were united in times of peace and difficulty.

"There will be many obstacles for us to overcome in the next few years, but I am confident that we as a nation can do it."

He said the city was already bustling with activity as volunteers prepared to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and the passing of Gautama Buddha.

"All over Malaysia, temples will be bustling with activity as devotees flock to attend the various activities. Streets will be packed with processions of beautiful floats.

"There will be an abundance of joy and peace and forgiveness as people seek blessings for themselves and their loved ones. Here's wishing all Malaysian Buddhists a Happy Wesak Day."

Meanwhile, in his Wesak Day message, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said the country would not be disrupted by extreme and aggressive ideologies as long as everyone was united to work towards peace and harmony.

"We should not allow any party to abuse religion for political means because the result of that is hatred and conflict.

"This will destroy unity and the people will be the victims."

Dr Chua said many temples had begun celebrating Wesak since last week to pray for the country's peace and stability.

"On this meaningful day, we are able to witness our fellow Buddhist friends celebrating Wesak in peace and harmony, and this strongly reflects our multicultural society and respect for different religions.

"MCA would like to wish all Buddhists a happy and meaningful Wesak Day.

"Let us all pray during this Wesak Day for prosperity, unity and religious harmony in our country."

On his Twitter account, MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel extended Wesak Day greetings, saying: "In the spirit of peace, serenity and happiness, I wish all Buddhists in Malaysia and throughout the world a very blessed Wesak Day."
