Najib: Rallies only lead to chaos

PUTRAJAYA - Any demand for change in the country must be based on the Federal Constitution and the rule of law, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said it was not necessary for Malaysians to take to the streets or tear down everything that had been built by the country's forefathers to achieve aspirations that might not be in line with the government of the day.

"If we demand for change, it must follow the Constitution and the rule of law.

"If not, we will end up following the law of the jungle and that will destroy all that has been built by our leaders in the past," he said when opening the Putrajaya Youth Festival here.

In an apparent swipe at Pakatan Rakyat which has organised a series of rallies in protest against the results of the recent 13th general election Najib said such methods would only lead to chaos.

"If you choose a government, you do so through the ballot box. You cannot choose a government through street demonstrations or overthrow a government through chaos," he said.

The Prime Minister reiterated that Malaysia's first-past-the-post system meant the party with the biggest number of seats wins, and not the one that won the popular vote as practised in a presidential election system such as in the United States.

"If we were to follow the presidential election system, I will contest against (opposition leader Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim ... no problem," he said to cheers from the crowd.

Najib also pointed out that any change, especially if it was spearheaded by youths, must be done on the basis of truth and rationality, not coloured by allegations and falsehoods perpetuated by those seeking personal gain.

"We cannot allow change that is based on falsehoods and allegations. Until today, they have not shown me where the Mat Bangla' (Bangladeshis) have gone to vote ... they claimed 40,000 of them were flown in.
Which airport? Where are the planes? Where is the (flight) manifest?

"Two days ago I asked the EC (Election Commission) chairman if there were any complaints. He said no, but on the Internet there are all sorts of stories. These are the falsehoods I am referring to," he said.

Earlier before his speech, Najib handed out the National Premier Youth Award to three recipients Johor lad Manndzri Nasib of the Malaysian Youth Council, Sabahan Halimah Abdul Rahman from the Puteri Islam Association and the MAYC Youth Association from Simpang Bekoh, Malacca, for their outstanding services and contributions.
