PETALING JAYA: The Malay and Chinese communities must work together and not allow themselves to be polarised because of politics, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

Promising that he will accord the Chinese “fair treatment and policies”, the Prime Minister urged the community to stick with the ruling coalition and not be swayed by the racial politics of DAP.

Speaking to senior editors at Sri Pentas here, he called on the Chinese to vote wisely.

“They must support Barisan Nasional and not fall for DAP's tactics of stirring up racial hatred.

Otherwise our country will end up very polarised with the Malays on one side and the Chinese on another. That will be a very sad day,” Najib said.

Stressing that Barisan's policy was to be fair to all through a national consensus, he said DAP on the other hand had been pitting the Chinese against the Malays by saying that the Chinese were being treated like second-class citizens.

Asked about Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali who is defending his Pasir Mas parliamentary seat, Najib said he was an independent candidate and would not be invited to join Barisan.

Earlier, in an interview with TV3, Najib said the level of Chinese support for Barisan varied according to areas.

“In some places, I am satisfied with the level of their support but in others, we still have work to do,” he added.

Najib said the Chinese had a high degree of entrepreneurial skills and know-how to generate wealth.

He hoped they would also realise the Government's contribution to their success through the creation of a conducive atmosphere to conduct their business.

“The Government has provided peace and security as well as business opportunities and incentives such as contracts and concessions,” said Najib.

He said the Government had created a liberal education system which allowed parents to opt for a variety of streams for their children.
