The Malaysian government is unwavering in its
commitment to free and fair elections. Recent reforms by the Election
Commission, such as the introduction of indelible ink and postal voting,
underline our belief in democratic principles. Today
we are making a further commitment to put those principles into
practice by agreeing to internationally recognised standards of
electoral transparency and fairness. I am proud to sign Transparency
International's Election Integrity pledge – and once Barisan Nasional’s
general election nominees are announced, I will ensure that all of our
candidates honour this agreement too.
The nominees have
already gone through a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission screening
process, to ensure they meet the high standards of integrity expected by
the Malaysian public. Responsibility for fulfilling the pledge lies
with its signatories, and it is a responsibility that I and my
colleagues in Barisan Nasional take seriously. But it also places a duty
on all Malaysians to hold their politicians to account. With an
electoral system that is stronger than ever, and a personal commitment
from our prospective MPs, it is my hope that the Malaysian people will
give us the opportunity to continue our reform agenda.
