KUALA LUMPUR: Water, which rightfully belongs to the masses, should not be turned into a political issue, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

Hence, he said the Federal Government had allocated an additional RM120mil to Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) to ease Selangor’s water woes.

Najib, who made the announcement at the launch of the 1Malaysia People’s Aid 2.0 (BR1M 2.0) in Taman Dagang, Ampang near here, said the allocation was in addition to the RM606mil that had already been given to Syabas.

“We do not want the people of Selangor to continue being victimised.

“We will solve the water issue as we cannot allow it to go on,” he said, adding that the water shortage in Selangor would have worsened had it not been for the earlier RM606mil.

Earlier at the Federal Territories Day celebration at the football stadium in Bandar Tun Razak, Najib said Malaysians should preserve racial and religious harmony by continuing to respect one another.

The Prime Minister later attended the Ponggal Unity Festival at Dataran Merdeka which saw tens of thousands of people turning up for it.

He said Tamil schools which were not fully aided would soon be in stages.

Najib said the Government was considering immediate implementation of the conversion process, following suggestions from the MIC and other Indian groups.

“We will have special allocations for Tamil schools nationwide to have pre-school classes,” he said.

Najib also said the Government would upgrade the MIC-run Tafe College to a Technical University College status soon.
