The premier went on a walkabout after attending a media dinner at G Hotel and trying various delicacies at the hawker centre on Sunday night.
Teacher Asni Annuar, 40, from Gombak, Selangor, who was holidaying with her husband Sulaiman Yaakub, 46, and three children, said she was thrilled to meet the Prime Minister.
“Not only did I get to shake hands with him, my children also each received an angpow,” she said.
Chew Cheong, 80, who drove from Kuala Lumpur with 15 family members in four cars for the holiday, said this was his first time seeing Najib in person.
“We had planned to see the PM and Psy at the Penang Barisan Nasional Chinese New Year open house in Han Chiang High School on the second day of Chinese New Year,” he said.
Sharvein Chandrasekaran, 13, from Klang, Selangor, said this was his second time seeing Najib in person.
He had met Najib at a Sri Murugan Centre education programme in Klang last year.
“I will keep the angpow he gave me to motivate myself to do well in my studies,” he said.
Penangite Khoo Kim Boay, 45, a sales manager, who now resides in Kuala Lumpur, said he was touched by the fact that the premier had chosen to spend Chinese New Year in the state this year.
“He has made an effort to be with the people of Penang,” he said after excitedly snapping photographs of Najib using his iPad.
Accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and son Nor Ashman, Najib ate Penang laksa, pasembur, satay, sotong bakar, cucur udang, taukua rendang and drank coconut juice and sugarcane juice.
Pasembur seller Ayub Khan Kalandar Mydin, 40, said he served five big trays of the dish at Najib’s table.
Ayub added that he was excited when someone from the Prime Minister’s Office made prior reservations for the food a day earlier.
