GEORGE TOWN, Feb 10 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said his involvement in making the Chinese New Year video clip is to make a difference in this year’s celebration.

Najib said it was also a gesture of appreciation and respect for the Chinese culture so that the people would respect the cultures of other races in this country.

“The video clip you saw is very different and some may ask why I did the video. I did the video because I wanted to do things differently this year.

“It gives a message to the Chinese community that I respect the Chinese culture. As much as you should respect the Malay culture, you should respect the Indian culture and also the Chinese culture,” he said in a brief speech at a Chinese New Year media night at G Hotel here tonight.

In the video clip lasting about one minute, Najib made a special appearance by beating a Chinese traditional drum.

The prime minister stressed that he wanted to be with the people of Penang because the state is important, describing it as a precious gem.

“I promise to people of Penang. We want to tackle the housing and traffic problem in Penang. Believe me, the promises will be fulfilled.”

At the event, Najib spent time chatting with about 300 media practitioners and Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) co-ordinators and party division chiefs.

His arrival was met by bureau chiefs of 16 media agencies including the National News Agency (Bernama), News Straits Times Press, Utusan Malaysia, The Star, Guang Ming Daily, Sin Chew Jit Poh and China Press.

Najib, who was accompanied by Penang BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow, started the dinner by mixing yee sang together with media representatives.

Also present were Penang Umno liaison chief Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop. — Bernama
