Share common responsibility to secure lasting peace: Najib

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today called on all nations to share a common responsibility to create a better future and secure lasting peace.

He said the international community faced perhaps it greatest challenge: "peace not just during our time, but peace for all times."

"It is a challenge that must be met collectively. It is imperative that we achieve a peace premised upon a covenant of the willing, not one enforced by hegemony or secured through coercion.

"Peace can only be achieved if we are willing to constructively engage each other, to substitute dialogue in place of conflict," he said at the Mahathir Award for Global Peace Ceremony, here today.

Najib said it was the spirit that inspired former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who stood solidly against war.

"Speaking at conferences across the world, he (Dr Mahathir) works tirelessly to deliver a simple message - war should not be the preferred path to peace," he said.

Najib said the award was another demonstration of Dr Mahathir's deep personal commitment to this cause.

"It is rare that a national leader rises to become a global icon; rarer still that they do so by compassion, not conquest. Only handfuls earn such recognition that they are known not just to their own people, but to the world, known not only by their titles but by a single name," he said.

Later, Najib presented the Lifetime Campaigner for Global Peace to Dr Mahathir of the Mahathir Award for Global Peace.

The Mahathir Award for Global Peace is an international peace award endowed by the Mahathir Global Peace Foundation established to contribute to worldwide peace efforts.

Also present were South Africa's President Jacob Zuma and wife, Nompumelelo Ntuli, Dr Mahathir and wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed, Najib's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, Chairman and Board of Trustees of Mahathir Global Peace Foundation, Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing.
