KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has offered
words of encouragement to Datuk Lee Chong Wei who had to bow out of the
final against China's Lin Dan at the World Badminton Championships in
Guangzhou today.
"There is pride in defeat against such a formidable opponent. Well done, Lee Chong Wei," Najib said on his Twitter account.
Once Lin Dan reached 20, Chong Wei threw in the towel to indicate his decision not to continue before being stretchered out for treatment.
Meanwhile, China's five-time World Badminton Championships winner Lin Dan described his foe Datuk Lee Chong Wei as a great rival despite the latter limping out after suffering cramps in the third set of men's singles final at the Tianhe Gymnasium in Guangzhou, today.
"Chong Wei is no longer a previous rival, I want to thank him because he is a great rival," Lin Dan told China's State-Run CCTV after winning the World Championships in Guangzhou, Sunday.
Lin Dan also appreciated every match played with his greatest rival as he said chances for him to play the game with Lee were becoming fewer.
The Chinese ace triumphed 16-21, 21-13, 20-17 (rtd) to clinch his fifth World Championships despite laying off from competitions for almost a year. --BERNAMA
