KUALA LUMPUR: Some 831,860 single mothers nationwide will enjoy
discounts on daily necessities through the 1Malaysia Consumer card.
Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Thursday the discounts of between 5% and 50% would be available at 2,170 participating shops nationwide.
“This will help to defray their expenses and alleviate their burden,”
he said after attending the Malaysia Single Mothers Network (Juwita)
gathering at PWTC.
The Prime Minister said single mothers could also get free legal advice through the National Legal Aid Foundation.
He also said a slew of requests from single mothers, ranging from housing to insurance schemes, were under consideration.
“We cannot approve anything for now because we are currently the caretaker government,” he said.
Najib added that the request that a certain percentage of the People's
Housing Project (PPR) units be allocated to single mothers would be
considered.
On the proposed insurance scheme for single mothers,
he said it would only cost RM12 annually and, in return, single mothers
would get RM5,000 in death benefits and RM10,000 for accident and loss
of limbs.
“This will only cost the government RM12mil a year,” he said.
He described single mothers as Barisan's “fixed deposit” and assured that the coalition would take care of their needs.
Najib's announcement was greeted with cheers by single mothers, including Zaiton Kassim, who said she was thankful for the aid.
“It will definitely help reduce my daily expenses. I am very happy,” she said.
