SUBANG JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has announced an additional 1,000 Kawasaki Ninja 250 (STD) for the police's Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB), in the second phase of crime-fighting initiative's implementation.

The allocation brings the number of URB motorcycles to 2,000, as the unit had initially started with 1,000 motorcycles when the initiative was launched in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Selangor on Dec 19 last year.

Najib said phase two was being implemented ahead of schedule in a bid to lower the crime rate further and heed the people's call for a safer country.

"We are implementing it ahead of schedule given its effectiveness in lowering the crime rate.

"These are the main motivating areas that encouraged the introduction of the Motorcycle Patrol Unit, which is a National Key Results Area (NKRA) initiative for reducing crime, under the recent Budget announcement," he said in his speech before launching the United Against Crime campaign here Saturday.

The motorcycle units will complement the police's regular car patrols and Ops Payung mobile beat bases.

The URB, which operates 24 hours in three shifts, will cover residential neighbourhoods, schools, business and industrial areas, and recreational parks.

A team of 1,000 officers were assigned initially for patrol duty under the NKRA contingent.
