Umno Youth wants Najib and Muhyiddin to continue leading party

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth wants the party's top two posts to be won uncontested at its coming elections, says its chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said the wing wanted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to remain as Umno president and deputy president respectively as they were “most qualified for the posts”.

“The wing respects and supports the democratic spirit in the party, but our priority must be to strengthen the party, and not internal politics,” Khairy said after chairing the wing's first exco meeting held after the general election yesterday.

”We also need a continuance of leaders to strengthen Umno.

“We support that they (Najib and Muhyiddin) remain as president and deputy president.”

Several Umno leaders, including vice-president Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi and information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan, have supported the call for the top two posts to be won uncontested.

The party, Khairy added, should be able to perform even better at the 14th general election and continue to remain as the backbone of the Barisan Nasional.

“Umno should be at the forefront ... even at a time when some of the component parties are facing a little problem,” he added.

Khairy also called for the process of direct membership into Barisan Nasional to be expedited.

Meanwhile, his deputy Datuk Razali Ibrahim said the wing unanimously wanted Khairy to continue as its chief.

“He has done a good job over the last five years,” said Razali who will not be defending his post.
