PM urges Malaysians to unite in prayer

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has called on Malaysians to pray for victims of the Penang Second Bridge collapse incident.

“Authorities will investigate the tragic incident. Let's focus on rescue efforts and pray for the victims and their families,” he said in his tweet yesterday.

One man died when the interchange ramp of the Penang Second Bridge, which is under construction in Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, Batu Maung, collapsed at about 7.15pm on Thursday.

MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong called for a thorough investigation into the incident, adding that if the findings showed that negligence was the cause, the guilty party must be held accountable.

“The structure of the bridge and the Batu Maung interchange must also be inspected and tested to ensure that the bridge structure remains strong,” he said, expressing sympathy to the victims and condolences to their kin.

MCA, he said, hoped both the federal and state governments would cooperate during this critical time and not point fingers at each other.
