Barisan Nasional all out to fulfil promise to develop rural Sarawak, says Najib

PAKAN: Barisan Nasional will fulfil its promise to bring more development to the state following the “strongest” support that it received from the people in the last 13th general election.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, speaking to a crowd of 6,000 during his Gawai Dayak call to Rumah Panjai George Nanga Nansang yesterday, said the BN would not make empty promises like the Opposition which only gave lip-service.

He said with the mandate from the people, the government’s transformation programme could be continued.
“We will now march on to become an industrialised nation by 2020. This mandate also shows that the BN agenda is better than the Opposition’s,” he added.

Najib noted that the people of the state, especially the Dayaks, were not easily misled by the Opposition during the elections, saying they knew who could look after their future.

“So because of this, today I want to assure you that in time to come, and according to our ability, we will intensify the development agenda for rural areas in Sarawak so that areas still left behind in terms of basic amenities will be looked into,” he assured.

Najib honours promise to rakyat

BETONG: The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has announced RM30mil more for continuing the perimeter survey of native customary rights (NCR) land in Sarawak next year.

“I promise that in next year’s budget, the Federal Government will provide RM30mil extra to continue the perimeter surveys,” Najib said, speaking at Rumah Wilson Begat Bakir, about 30km from here.

“With the additional amount, a lot more will be surveyed and we can finish what we started. The natives will have land. We honour our promises,” he added, making the first of his three Gawai Dayak visits to rural longhouses yesterday.

According to Betong MP, Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas, who is Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister, the Sarawak government currently recognises 681,739ha of native land. However, not all have been surveyed and gazetted.

GE13: Barisan's big wins in Sarawak due to improvement in infrastructure say BN leaders

KUCHING: The steady improvement of basic infrastructure helped Barisan Nasional win big in Sarawak's rural areas.

"I think the results show that rural voters have renewed their belief in Barisan to deliver for them infrastructure," Betong MP Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas said last night.

He beat PKR's Cecilia Siti by a large margin of 4,589 votes. "We have achieved about 80% of our plans for (basic necessity coverage in) Betong. The next stage, the most critical stage, is to uplift rural standards of living,"

He said education improvements would be given priority, and also projects that help locals generate higher income.

Asked about the Opposition's charges that Barisan had neglected rural voters, Douglas replied: "It's all propaganda that was not believed by the voters. Like I said, the results show rural voters have reaffirmed their support of Barisan. Rural voters in Sarawak saw a lot of infra upgrades in the last two years especially."

Kapit MP, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, agreed. "People in rural areas still care the most about bread and butter issues," Nanta said.

The third term MP had won his first two stints in public office uncontested. "This time we really had to work. The Opposition brought some issues. People want development."

Najib friendly towards Sarawak, says Taib

LIMBANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is friendlier towards Sarawak than Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was when he was the deputy prime minister, and this is reflected in the huge allocations given to the state in recent years.

Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud told the 1,500-strong crowd attending the launching of a RM6 million rural electricity supply (RES) project at Rumah Akoh in Ulu Limbang yesterday that Anwar had at one time diverted some funds meant for the state elsewhere.

“For instance, he diverted money meant for Unimas (University Malaysia Sarawak) and other projects when he was in the Cabinet,” Taib said at the longhouse in Sungai Ensurai.

Urging the people to sideline Pakatan Rakyat, Taib said the pact had contradicting stands and would be a poor substitute for the BN.

He predicted that PAS, a component of the Pakatan coalition, would end up empty handed in Sarawak in the May 5 general election.

The Opposition, he pointed out, were bent on running down the BN government despite the government having made great strides in the socio-economic front.

Najib announces free flight ticket under 1Malaysia Integration Programme

SEPANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today announced the implementation of the '1Malaysia Integration Programme' together with Air Asia, which sees a free air ticket offer by the airline for routes between Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula for a specific period.

He said he was present to launch the design of the livery for the special 1Malaysia aircraft in conjunction with the integration programme at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), here this morning because he was attracted to any endeavour to promote national integration and solidarity.

Najib said the initiative taken by Air Asia based on the 1Malaysia concept mooted by him would certainly be able to bring Sabah and Sarawak closer to the peninsula.

"I look at the 1Malaysia concept as a very meaningful idea that can take the nation to the pinnacle of success that we dream of," he said at the event to launch the livery of the special Airbus A320 aircraft at the LCCT.

He said the concept emphasised on the element of inclusiveness in every effort initiated by the government because it realised that the country's potentials could be attained if everyone could move and act as one community, that is, as Malaysians.
