KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded more than 20% growth in health
tourism over the past three years and it generated almost RM600mil in
revenue alone last year, says Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Prime Minister said on Tuesday the importance of health tourism was identified in the National Key Economic Areas, and the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council was established to promote it.
He said that collaboration in the private sector was complemented by collaboration in the public sector which saw organisations such as MHTC, Pemandu and TalentCorp are working together to address the needs of Malaysia's fast growing healthcare sector
“These efforts are paying off. Over the past three years Malaysia has seen more than 20% growth in health tourism - generating almost RM600 million in revenue last year alone,” he said at the official opening of Park City Medical Centre here and the launch of the new logo of Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care.
“This is a result of improved quality of healthcare, customer experience, proactive alliances and niche marketing. Patients heading to Malaysia have mainly sought cardiac, cosmetics, ophthalmology, dental, and orthopaedic treatments, as well as diagnostic services,” he said.
Najib said Ramsay Health Care is one of the best healthcare service providers globally and he expected the joint venture with Sime Darby, which resulted in the creation of Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care, would further boost Malaysia’s aims to be a regional healthcare provider.
“It provides a solid platform for expansion in the Asian healthcare sector,” he said.
Najib pointed out a key driver in Malaysia’s medical tourism initiative was the technological platform provided by MHTC.
He said consumers from all over the world gain access to healthcare service providers, information and advertising via the Internet.
“By accessing web-based resources medical tourists can gain in-depth knowledge about their preferred markets and destinations. Websites dedicated to medical tourism connect consumers with an array of healthcare providers and brokers.
I believe Malaysia’s medical tourism industry is succeeding in part because of effective government regulation which ensures that foreign patients get quality and safe care,” he added.
