Najib: Time for civil servants to fulfill mandate given by the people

PUTRAJAYA: Civil servants need to set a new standard by shifting to a new paradigm, reflecting the mandate, expectation and demand of the people said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The reminder to move forward came in the wake of almost 30 days after the 13th General Election (GE13) which was held on May 5.

Najib said civil servants cannot afford to look back and waste any more time on excessive politicking because it would derail the task of fulfilling promises and aspiration of voters who have given the mandate during the GE13.

As for the GE13, the Prime Minister said the government had taken several steps and measures in accordance with the law to ensure a transparent, fair and just election, including accepting recommendations from the opposition parties.

"However, there are still some who dispute the results of the GE13 claiming electoral fraud. If we know the procedure, it is almost impossible for anyone to cheat in a big way," he said in his speech when addressing the staff of the Prime Minister's Department during a monthly gathering at Dataran Perdana, here, today, the first since the GE13.

Najib, 59, is the son of a Malaysian founding father, hails from the Muslim-majority nation's revered ethnic Malay nobility, and has served three decades in the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the country's dominant party.

Najib urges Indians to give him strong mandate

KLANG, May 4 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday urged the Indian community to give him a strong mandate in the upcoming 13th general election (GE13) on Sunday.

He said a vote for the Barisan Nasional (BN) by the Indian community will ensure their interests would continue to be looked after by the ruling coalition.

“I am making a personal appeal to the Indian community to give me a strong mandate, support BN and have nambikei (faith) in me.

“A vote for the BN team is a vote for me and vote for me is the vision for the Indian community and for the country.

“You have faith in me, you have ‘nambikei’ in me, give me a strong mandate, I will deliver for the Indian community and the country,” Najib (picture) said before more than 20,000 people when officiating the Indian Entrepreneur Carnival organised by Malaysian Associated Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MAICCI) at Padang Chetty here last night.

Najib said since he became prime minister, he had introduced many initiatives to uplift the socio-economic status of the Indian community in the country.

GEORGE TOWN, May 1 ― Seizing on rising discontent over high property prices amid low wages among city folks, Datuk Seri Najib Razak has promised to build one million affordable houses across the country in the next five years in return for the urban vote.

The Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman’s coalition wants to win the May 5 general election with a convincing two-thirds parliamentary majority that was lost in Election 2008 when urban voters switched to the parties that now make up Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

Under gloomy skies, the caretaker prime minister focussed on affordable housing in a whistle-stop tour of Penang while introducing BN candidates to crowds largely made up of supporters and party workers yesterday.


“We promise one million affordable houses. But they promise, not one million, not 500,000 but just 150,000,” Najib said as he compared both coalition’s manifestos to a large crowd at the Penang riot police base in the Rifle Range residential area.

The working-class neighbourhood is the largest low-cost housing scheme in the island state, with nine 17- and 18-storey concrete blocks built in 1969 when the then opposition Gerakan won power. Gerakan is now part of BN and party secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow is the state coalition chief.

In Penang, Najib pledged to build 9,999 affordable flats in three DAP strongholds around the Rifle Range area, which is to be redeveloped from the 3,735 units into 4,800 units when combined with the police base land. The policemen are to be moved elsewhere.

He then asked the voters to elect the BN candidates to ensure the projects take off, saying “I have trust and confidence in this BN team to bring real change to Penang.”

Najib: We need a strong mandate

KUALA LUMPUR : ANYTHING less than a strong mandate for  Barisan Nasional  can  lead to instability in the country, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

This was because there was a need to continue with the current robustness of the country's stock market and strong showing by the ringgit.

Najib said this when asked about several analyses and polls that suggested a likely "hung Parliament" scenario following the 13th General Election on May 5.

"That is not a good outcome for the country. Anything less than a strong mandate will lead to great uncertainty.

"The markets, during the last few days, have become more positive.

"The stock exchange and the ringgit have grown stronger, so I think it bodes well for the general election," Najib told Al Jazeera's Veronica Pedrosa during the Talk to Al Jazeera programme, which started airing yesterday.

Admitting the ardous task and heavy responsibility of leading Barisan into a general election for the first time since he entered politics 37 years ago, Najib spoke of his late father Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's reminder to him that his duty to the nation is to fulfill the trust of the people to the best of his ability.

“As we head into the 13th general election, I, as the leader of Barisan, humbly seek your mandate to carry on this task of lifting Malaysia to a new heights. I seek to lead a government that puts the interests and the welfare of the people first.

Youth to give Najib strong mandate — Abdul Karim

SIBU: Youth would give Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak a strong mandate to continue his various transformation programmes, said Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said Najib’s transformation programmes have won the hearts of all strata of society, including the youth who would play a pivotal role in deciding the outcome of the coming General Election.

“If we bother to study what he had done in the last four years when he was the Prime Minister, he had done tremendously well.

“No sector of the society or community is ignored and we can see that he has been a really hardworking Prime Minister,” said Abdul Karim.

Najib asks for a stronger mandate

Datuk Seri Najib Razak appealed to Malaysians today for a bigger mandate in Election 2013, saying this would be the only way his team could complete the transformational policies he had put in place five years ago.

Making his polls pitch in a blog posting here, Najib trumpeted his administration's many achievements and successes since he took on the post of prime minister in April 2009, even saying his government was two years ahead of schedule to turn Malaysia into a high-income nation.

"Our track record shows that we are a government that delivers and keeps its promises.

I want us to be proud of what we have achieved, and ignore those who try and talk Malaysia down," the prime minister wrote.

Without outlining specifics, Najib warned of the stark contrast between the likely future of the country under the present Barisan Nasional (BN) administration and an untested government led by the current crop of opposition leaders.

"One is pessimistic and divided, the other clear and optimistic," he said in the blog post.

"One is unprepared and full of uncosted and empty promises, the other methodical and fully tested."

Najib, the nation's sixth prime minister, is heading for what is expected to be the most closely-fought polls contest in Malaysian history.
