British lords praise Najib

 

GEORGE TOWN: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s decision to engage Hindraf to address ethnic Indian issues has won praise from members of the British House of Lords.

Lord Diljit Rana called it a wise move and Baroness Sandip Verma said it showed Najib’s seriousness in addressing issues of concern to the Indian community.

Both spoke yesterday at a ceremony to honour Hindraf chairman P Waythamoorthy’s appointments as a senator and deputy minister in charge of Indian affairs.

The event, sponsored by Rana and Verma, was held in the British upper house. Among the guests were Malaysia’s Deputy High Commissioner to Britain, Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah. Several Malaysians residing in London and representatives of various civic groups also attended.

Kit Siang praises Najib’s peace pledge

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang yesterday praised Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s promise to ensure a peaceful transition of power should the federal or any state government switch hands after Election 2013.

Lim in turn, offered Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) commitment to respect the results of the polls, regardless whether the fledgling opposition pact loses its bid to topple Barisan Nasional (BN) from Putrajaya.

“Najib commitment 2 “respect democracy” n “2 respect the voice of the rakyat” deserve commendation — something I asked him many times to do,” Lim wrote on microblogging site Twitter yesterday afternoon, shortly after the Dewan Rakyat was dissolved.

“Pakatan Rakyat makes similar commitment to respect the voice of ppl in 13GE n peaceful transition of power, whether Putrajaya or State,” he tweeted.

The DAP adviser, however, added that if Najib’s pledge is sincere, two other pertinent issues should follow — that no one should raise the spectre of the May 13 racial riots or employ the politics of fear in relation to riots or mayhem while on the campaign trail.

In his televised address to announce Parliament’s dissolution yesterday morning, Najib promised that there will be a peaceful transition of power should there be a change in the federal government after the 13th general election.

“We respect democracy, we are committed to our political transformation, we are committed to respect the voice of the rakyat,” the country’s sixth prime minister stressed towards the end of his 15-minute speech in announcing the dissolution.
