Four Years of Building a Brighter Future

Yesterday was a special day for me, and not just because it marked the start of our general election. It was exactly four years ago when I took my oath of office at Istana Negara, putting me at the head of a nation which was steadily growing in size and economy.

Since then, I have set into motion many initiatives aimed at creating a freer and more prosperous nation. Five key areas stand out and I have written more about each one on my website.

Firstly, let me talk about 1Malaysia. At the core of our transformation was my belief in the importance of national unity irrespective of race or religious belief. I firmly believe that nobody should be left behind as we move ahead to developed nation status. It was from this belief that 1Malaysia was born, together with various initiatives  that benefit the rakyat till this day. From housing and healthcare to food and education, you can find many 1Malaysia themed programmes that provide affordable and quality services for all Malaysians.

GE13: Najib tells why he chose April 3 for dissolution of Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wanted four years in office before calling for polls as he needed sufficient time to see all his initiatives through.

The Prime Minister marked his fourth year in office on Wednesday also the day Dewan Rakyat was dissolved to pave the way for the general election.

Asked why he chose April 3 to seek the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's assent to disband Parliament, Najib said: “It was a good day. We couldn't get a better or more auspicious date, and Cabinet happened to be meeting that day.

“Actually, in my mind, I wanted four years (in office) because we required time for planning of policies and to see through their inception and execution.

“If you work in the Government, you will realise that you require a decent amount of time to see all these through,” he said.

Najib, however, stressed that Barisan was not afraid to face the Opposition in the election.

“Mind you, none of the Opposition-held states dissolved their legislature earlier.

“So, if they complain about the time taken to dissolve (Parliament) they should look at themselves and ask why they did not dissolve theirs earlier,” he said.

GE13: Najib announces dissolution – finally

PUTRAJAYA: The guessing game is finally over after months of intense speculation with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announcing to the nation that Parliament is dissolved to pave the way for the 13th general election.

The much-awaited announcement was made at 11.32am yesterday at Bangunan Perdana Putra and carried “live” by television stations.

Najib had earlier sought an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah for his consent to dissolve Parliament.

Prior to the announcement, the Prime Minister's Office, for the first time, used Twitter to alert netizens of the scheduled “live” broadcast of Najib's announcement.

Clad in a dark-coloured suit and red tie, Najib, who was flanked by his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and in the presence of his Cabinet ministers, called for all parties concerned to ensure peaceful and smooth elections in the interest of the nation.

GE13 – A Brighter Future For Malaysia

This morning, I had an audience with the King and sought his consent to dissolve the lower house of Parliament. This signals the beginning of our nation’s thirteenth general election. It is an election that Barisan Nasional intends to win.

I want to share with you my vision for Malaysia. It is a vision of a confident nation: one that celebrates its differences, and draws strength from its diversity; where economic growth brings more profitable businesses, more employment, and better lives; where political reform brings greater security and freedom; and where national unity brings stability and prosperity.

Our track record shows that we are a government that delivers and keeps its promises. I want us to be proud of what we have achieved, and ignore those who try and talk Malaysia down. There is still much work to be done.  But our country has made great progress over the past four years and we should be proud of that. We expect to become a high-income nation by 2018 – two years ahead of schedule – which is a remarkable achievement.

Of course, a rise in GDP alone is not complete development. Economic success alone is not enough. It is also the society in which we live that matters. For example, Malaysians must be able to determine their own success, irrespective of race or religion. They should feel safe in their communities, and have clean water in their homes and good roads to drive on.
