Najib offers condolences to Azizan's family

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has offered his condolences to the family of former Kedah menteri besar Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak who died in Alor Setar today.

"Al-Fatihah. Condolences to the family of Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak on his demise. May his soul be blessed," the prime minister said in his Twitter post. Azizan, 69, died at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Alor Setar at 11.10am today after a long illness.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, on behalf of the government, Umno and the Barisan Nasional (BN), extended his condolences to Azizan's family.

He described Azizan's demise as a loss to the country as the deceased had contributed to the country's development, especially Kedah during his tenure as menteri besar.

"On this score, we feel that his demise is a loss as a friend and a leader.

Politics aside, we believe his demise is a loss to us as well," he told reporters after receiving Myanmar Parliament speaker Thura U Shwe Mann at his office at Parliament House here today.

Genting bus crash: PM, DPM convey condolences to victims' families

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has expressed his sympathies for victims of the Genting bus tragedy, in which 37 people perished.

"Condolences to the family of the victims. Hope the agencies involved are conducting the best rescue operation," he tweeted Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, in Bangkok, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has directed all relevant agencies to set up a special task force to investigate the accident.

"I am saddened by this accident. Condolences to the family of the victims. I hope they will remain patient in this trying time," he said upon arrival for his three-day official visit to Thailand here in the evening.

He said the task force must work speedily to identify the cause of the accident and identify ways to prevent similar tragedy in future.

"Whether this tragedy was caused by bad bus or road conditions, human negligence or other factor, we need to know it fast so that action can be taken to rectify the problem.

"The Genting Highlands road is a very important route used by many tourists on a daily basis, thus the enforcement of all relevant laws must be given priority to ensure it remains safe," he added.

Najib conveys condolences to Britain on Thatcher's demise

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today conveyed his deepest condolences and sympathies on behalf of the government, the people of Malaysia and himself to Britain, for the loss of Baroness Margaret Thatcher.

He conveyed the message to British Prime Minister David Cameron, following the sudden demise of Thatcher, a former British Prime Minister, yesterday.

According to Najib, Britain had lost a great leader while the world had lost a statesperson.

"She will be deeply missed in many parts of the world, especially within the Commonwealth. Through you, please also extend my heartfelt feelings of profound sympathy to the late Baroness Thatcher's family as they grieve their personal loss," he said in the message.

Najib said the late Thatcher, the first lady British Prime Minister and the longest serving, was a formidable leader of her time.

"Her strength of character and leadership qualities befit the challenging times that Britain faced during her years in office while the international respect and influence she earned put the United Kingdom in good stead," he said.

Najib said she was a close friend to Malaysia during her tenure and the bilateral relations were brought to a new level and put on a stronger footing.

"May her soul rest in peace and I pray that God Almighty will comfort her bereaved family, as well as the government and people of the United Kingdom during this period of mourning."

Margaret Thatcher, the "Iron Lady" as she was known throughout the world succumbed to stroke at the age of 87.

She held the Prime Minister's post from 1979 to 1990. -- Bernama
