NILAI- Getting together and having a chat with their neighbours
is a normal activity for most housewives in the evenings following the
tea time with their families.
Here in Taman Andalas, the scenario is not very much different with the housewives' talks usually centred around their children, perking up the neighbourly ties and adding on to the lively evening activities in the neighbourhood.
On April 25, however, the evening's excitement had a different reason altogether, as housewife Norhazani Mat Jidan, 35, had been just informed of the impending visit of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to the state.
For the Kuala Lipis, Pahang born Norhazani, it was like a wish come true as she had harboured hopes of meeting up face-to-face with any one of the country's leaders in the four years since she moved into the housing area.
Seeing it as a golden opportunity, Norhazani quickly went through the details of Muhyiddin's scheduled visit to Negeri Sembilan on April 26.
TRAVELLING ON A MOTORBIKE
One programme caught her eyes -- the scheduled breakfast programme with the DPM and the people in Mantin, which was four kilometres away from her housing estate.
While she had no car, the lady was not one to give up and together with her friends made plans to make it to the breakfast programme.
Their journey was taken with Honda EX5 motorcycles, and together the team of ladies or 'mak kiah' made their way very early in the morning to Mantin to ensure a good seat at the event.
"Throughout the journey, I was worried about being late or not getting a seat on time but I was lucky and was among the first set of crowd to arrive at the venue.
"I just wanted to meet up with any one of the leaders and especially Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. However, getting to see the deputy prime minister was already good enough," she told Bernama.
Good fortune did smile her way as the Barisan Nasional (BN) delegation comprising Muhyiddin, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, BN candidates for the Nilai state seat Gan Chee Biow and Seremban parliament seat, Datuk Dr Yeow Chai Thiam, did make their way to where Norhazani was seated together with her friends.
"I did not expect the deputy prime minister to come to our table and shake hands with us. Before this, I had seen him in the newspapers and television only," she said.
REMEMBERING THE IMPORTANT MESSAGE
Although she had looked forward to meeting up with the education minister personally, she also wanted to hear what he had to say to the people of Mantin.
Furthermore, she said there had been plenty of unflattering stories cooked up by the campaigning Pakatan Rakyat about BN in Mantin, which comes under the Nilai state legislative seat.
Asked on what was the most important message that Muhyiddin had imparted to her, she said she remembered top most his call urging them to give the mandate to Najib for the first time as the leader of the federal government, so that he as the head of BN, would be able to continue to helm the country and ensure the continuation of the various transformation programmes that had been planned for the country.
This, she said, reminded her of the performance track record of Najib, the cooperation provided by Muhyiddin and the BN parties to the prime minister in helping people like her in many practical ways.
"Although I was happy to meet the deputy prime minister, I felt a little sad that he had to make a call like that. I have seen the prime minister working very hard and trying to help fulfill the needs and welfare of people from all walks of life.
"What is wrong with us saying a 'thank you' and giving Najib the support. I also feel bad that there are many people who have been fooled into believing the negative things said about the prime minister.
"Najib's sincerity and commitment towards harmonising the people is not something new that he has been doing during this ongoing election campaign but something which he has been doing all along since he became a prime minister four years ago," she said.
GIVING A HAND IN EASING THE FINANCIAL BURDEN
Being married to a military man, Norzahani also said she considered the announcement made by Najib that the government will streamline the grades in the armed and police forces in line with the Public Services Sector as something uplifting for her family.
She said the higher income for her husband will also help reduce the family's financial burden.
Lorry driver, M. Sundararaju, 51, meanwhile also commended Najib.
"Najib has provided much help for the Indian community. I will feel more assured if BN continues its management of the country".
The assistance of more than RM500 million provided to Tamil primary schools, the future action plan for Tamil schools and more recently the approval of seven licenses for the establishment of seven new Tamil schools, have touched Sundararaju to use one of Najib's favourite words, "Nambikei" or trust on BN.
CHANGE TOWARDS BN
Tay Car Men, meanwhile felt that instead of accepting the opposition's slogan of "change", she said voters in Mantin should instead change their support this time to BN and Najib.
Mantin, which comes under the Nilai state seat is currently represented by DAP candidate, Yap Yew Weng.
For this 13th General Election, BN has fielded new candidate, Gan, who will be in a three-cornered fight for the seat with DAP candidate, J. Arul Kumar and Independent candidate S. Rajasheger.
Tay said the Chinese community has never been neglected under the leadership of Najib as he had provided various forms of assistance to them including aid to Chinese schools, the financial assistance programme of Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M), as well as in the retail area with the Kedai Rakyat
1Malaysia (KR1M) and the schoolbooks programme, Bantuan Buku 1Malaysia (BB1M).
